James, I collect and study the Model 520 shotgun and it’s variants and documented close to 1000 serial numbers that I have cross referenced with design changes noted in period catalogs and advertising. This allows me to estimate a year of production that’s fairly close. The lowest serial I’ve seen is #1978.It was bought out by Savage in 1920. and the "J. Stevens Arms Co" brand name was again used until after WWII, then just the name "Stevens" was used up until 1990. Most likely, you have a pre-Model 94.
