I found the romance quite good. As others point out, at the start of the story, you have two completely distinct worlds, one with Yumi, the other with the Nightmare Painter (he calls himself "Painter"). There is obvious setup for each world, and that takes awhile. But, when they meet, the story picks up the pace.I'd argue that yes, Yumi is good without Cosmere background.
